Road Safety Tests - What are they?

BHS Website - Road Safety pages

Why learn how to ride correctly on the road?

Road sense! This is the only riding test that at some point could save your life and those hacking with you.  It certainly improves your chances of preventing accidents while earning the understanding and consideration of the motorist, which might help another rider in the future?

What is involved in the test?

There are 4 parts to the Riding and Road Safety test

First is a written multiple choice test, a pass mark of 8 out of 10 must be achieved to proceed.

Next is a tack safety check.  It is not a "Best Turned out" competition but your tack needs to be correctly fitted, safe and in good repair.  We also check your horse is suitable, for example the condition of their feet.  And we look at you - are you dressed appropriately for hacking out on the roads?  We do ask you why these checks are necessary!

Then the tough bit - a simulated route is marked in a field or other enclosed area.  There will be various hazards all typical of those found on our roads. You will also need to display several skills - right and left turns; Trotting; Emergency dismount and lead on the road.

Once you have satisfied the examiners that you have met the standard, you are then invited to ride a route on the roads.

At every step of the test the examiners assess your progress and even if you are not entirely successful they will offer help and advice on the areas that you went wrong - it is very similar to a driving test in that way!

How do I get tested?

There are 2 ways to get tested - join an existing event or organise a test yourself!  see the next 2 sections for details

How do I organise a test?

Organising a test is quite straightforward. The first step is to contact the local Road Safety Representative.  They will visit the proposed site, do a Risk Assessment, confirm there is enough space for the simulated Test and check that there is a good road route available.  There is a charge for this visit but it is small, mainly to cover travelling costs.  A lot of advice is always given over the phone so you can get a lot of the leg work done before we come to visit

Once approved, you need to gather about 8 riders for testing.  It is an idea to recruit smaller yards or groups of friends to take part.

Lastly you need to book a trainer.  The cost can vary as it is a similar situation to a freelance instructor attending your yard.  The Road Safety Representative will hold a list of Recommended Trainers that are also known to hold their own insurance.
